Music streaming officially began in the 1990’s and back then, the entire concept was foreign and very far-removed from what most people understood.

Up until that point, fans purchased albums – a real, hard copy of a compilation of music that could be held in your hand. Now, everything has changed. With the introduction of streaming sites, it has become all too easy for fans to get the music they want whenever they want. So easy, in fact, that in most cases, it’s free.

Of course, this is ideal for those doing the streaming. Free music? Nothing could be better! But what about the artists? If the music is so free, it only makes sense that the artists probably aren’t being compensated as well as they should be for all their work. This infographic provides a closer look at several streaming sites and just what they offer to artists. Here you’ll see the good, the bad, and the ugly, because at just $0.0013 per song, that looks pretty ugly. The good news is that not all sites shell out such a low payout, such as Arena, who offers $0.21 per stream. Care to learn more? Take a look and perhaps your opinion on the music streaming industry will change.

  • “The music industry is in transition. Let’s make sure talented artists are recognized for their work!” Very well said, but do we have constructive offerings on the side? This infographic is excellent. Digital distribution is shifting from money to simply getting new fans/promotion, it seems? Who knows what is on the horizon, but I didn’t expect an ending like that. Thank you JTV Digital. All my best
